Serious game or e-learning: how to choose the right format

11 April 2026·4 min read

"We want to take our training digital." Behind that sentence lie two very different paths: the e-learning module and the serious game. Choosing the right one saves you from paying a lot for a format that does not fit.

E-learning: passing on knowledge efficiently

An e-learning module structures content: chapters, videos, quizzes, assessment. It excels when the goal is to pass on clear knowledge to a large audience, track completion and update content easily.

Serious games: learning by doing

A serious game puts learners in a real situation and makes them decide. It excels when the knowledge is a skill (handling a situation, weighing up options, applying a procedure under pressure) and when engagement is a goal in itself.

A simple decision framework

  • Knowledge goal, large audience, controlled budget → e-learning.
  • Behaviour goal, role play, need for engagement → serious game.
  • Both? An e-learning course can easily include a game-based sequence at its key moment.

The right question is not "which one is best?" but "what should the learner be able to do at the end?"

At EVAVEO, we always start from that end goal to recommend the most suitable format, or sometimes a combination of the two.
